New format for weekend races – starting May 15, 2021

NEW FORMAT FOR WEEKEND RACES
While we love the session format, it is simply not conducive to having people available to run the gate, write times down, announce, and set barrels all day, so I’ve decided we have to make a change to our race format.

Starting Saturday, May 15 at R Bar B, we will have TWO sessions – a morning one starting at 9:30 a.m. and and afternoon one starting at 12:30 p.m. (or as close to that as possible). We will start exhibitions for the morning session at 9:30 a.m., then run 50 open/youth/senior runs in the morning session. After that, we’ll open the arena for 5 minutes for those in the afternoon (hopefully 12:30 p.m.) session, then run another set of exhibitions followed by as many open/youth/senior runs as we need to finish the race.

Here’s the new schedule for our weekend races (except June 13 at Burlington, which will have 10:30 & 1:30 session times).
9:30 session – Exhibitions, 50 jackpot runs (open, youth, senior all in same draw, peewee added to end of any drag) There is no “open arena” time for this session because outdoor arenas are open for riding at approximately 9 a.m. as long as you don’t run over the folks staking the pattern.
12:30 session – 5 minutes open arena, exhibitions, 50 jackpot runs (open, youth, senior all in same draw, peewee added to end of any drag) We will add runs past 50 in this session as needed but will NOT do any exhibition runs or open arena time after the start of the Afternoon (12:30) session.

The entry forms will all be updated to reflect the two sessions. If you MUST run early or late, please just note it in the entry comments and I will do my best to accommodate those requests.
Hopefully the new format still gives contestants some flexibility to do more than one thing in a day as many of you have been able to do while also providing us a larger worker pool so the same people aren’t running the gate/office/setting barrels all day – or most importantly, one person isn’t setting multiple barrels or running the gate and setting barrels.

I truly appreciate those of you who jump in and help whenever needed. We could not run these large barrel races without people helping throughout the day.

News updates – April 19, 2021

Our year of outdoor races is off to  a slow start thanks to several weekends of rain and mud, but we do have 6 NBHA points races scheduled for May, and the first 5 are BBR approved.

The first two Cans N Tans buckle series dates were wiped out by rain & mud, but we are scheduled to get that series going this Saturday, April 24, at Crossroads Cowboy Church arena in Perry, and Sunday, April 25, at the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds just off K-7 in Kansas City.

I’m trying to get all our races listed on Barrel Horse World as well as Facebook and this website. For the most up to date information on race days, please refer to Facebook as it is MUCH easier to update from anywhere. I can post on there from my phone but have to use a computer to update our website or BHW listings.

Cans N Tans Buckle Series

Due to the April 11 race being rained out, Cans N Tans now has 10 dates and the first one is Saturday, April 17 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds horse show arena in Tonganoxie.

** No dates will be added to the series until/unless MORE than 3 races are cancelled due to weather/ground conditions. Hopefully we don’t have to do that, so please do your “rain rain go away” dances during the weeks leading up to our races, especially when you live near the arena we want to run in!

April 3, 2021 Results are posted

Results from our amazing April 3 race at the Lyndon Saddle Club have been posted on the Results page. We had 96 entries in the open, 29 in the senior, 18 youth, 12 pee wees, 10 in the Sponsorship sidepot, 7 in the futurity sidepot, and 10 in the derby sidepot, plus Easter Egg hunts for all ages and what looked like a pretty busy concession stand run by the Lyndon Saddle Club. Sean Kelsey was on hand taking pictures of the action, and we enjoyed great ground worked by Dave Wright of the Lyndon Saddle Club.

It was a great way to kick off our 2021 season, and we look forward to more wonderful races at Lyndon and other outdoor arenas this spring!

Awards Rules:

  • Awards Fee – $5 per horse/rider combination
  • Points do not count for buckles/awards until awards fee is paid.
  • To be eligible for awards, horse/rider awards fee must be paid BEFORE points will begin counting.
  • A rider may nominate as many horses as he/she wishes in as many classes/sidepots as he/she is eligible for.
  • Maximum awards fee is $20 per person. No cap on how many awards an individual paying $20 in awards fees is eligible for.

Examples:

  • Amy nominates Slick’s Cash Guy for an open award and French Cash Ta Fame for a futurity award. Amy pays $10 in awards fees.
  • Lacy nominates Buddy for a youth award and an open award, and Flash for a youth award and a derby award. Lacy pays $20 in awards fees. If she chose to nominate Flash for an open award also, her awards fees would still be $20.
  • No awards fee will be paid by Pee Wee contestants.
  • Pee Wees must compete in at least 4 events to be eligible for awards.
  • The Champion Unassisted Pee Wee will win a buckle, and the Champion Assisted Pee Wee will receive a grooming set.
  • Every Pee Wee who competes in at least 4 races will receive an award.
  • Points in each class and sidepot will be awarded from 10 points for first in a division down to 1 point for 10th in a division. Most points in each division at the end of the series wins that division’s buckle. Any horse that is not nominated will not earn points, but those points will not roll to the next nominated horse.
    • Example:
      • 1st – Lacy on Buddy 10 points
      • 2nd – Abby on Frank (not nominated – would be 9 points for a nominated horse/rider combo)
      • 3rd – Amy on Slick’s Cash Guy 8 points

Tiebreakers:

  1. Most shows attended
  2. Most first place finishes
  3. Most second place finishes
